Metro FM

Andrew Nkuna, one of DAW's contracting dieticians, recently had the opportunity to do a live broadcast interview on Metro FM. Here is what he had to say about the experience:

"The arrangement for the interview by Zanele was great and the presenter Criselda was wonderful.

Firstly, live interviews is different with the consultation room, it requires the ability to control the direction of the contents

Secondly it requires the ability to be fast to can do 45 minutes assessment with less than a minute in order to address the listener’s questions and comments appropriately

Thanks for the opportunity; it was a very good experience."

Positive Feedback

Chantal Walsh, one of DAW's dieticians, recently had the opportunity to give a talk to some canoeing athletes at FLCC and this was some of the positive feedback we received:

"The talk was really SO interesting and informative and Chantal managed to bring it to their level and age group and target the kind of information they would need and be interested in like pre-race, during race and post race nutrition / hydration.

She clarified many interesting things for all of us regarding various ideas that people have that are not accurate and was able to explain WHY some things don’t work so effectively or are harmful rather than beneficial (They wanted to know why they shouldn’t have a pie before the race for example! And can they use powdered or condensed milk because kids in poor homes don’t have fresh milk easily available etc)

They kids were really interested and asked a lot of really interested questions that indicated they were actually paying attention and understanding nutrition better and WHY we tell them to eat/drink properly."

If you are interested in one of our qualified dieticians giving a talk at your company, school or sports club please contact Lynne on 082 325 1753 or Claudia on 074 159 9139. We are able to cover a variety of topics!

Florida Lake Canoe Club

On Monday the 4th July we were privileged to give a presentation to some of the young canoeing athletes at the Florida Lake Canoe Club. The talk covered balanced, healthy eating; low fat, low GI meals and how we can combine each food group pre, during and after a competition or training session to ensure we perform at our peak.

The participants were extremely motivated and asked numerous relevant and interesting questions. I was pleased to clear up few misunderstandings about nutrition and the food we eat.

Thank you to the FLCC for giving us the opportunity to help and guide your young athletes in the correct pathway to good health and nutrition.

Welcome Home Liezl

DAW would like to welcome Liezl back into the country!!
She recently went over to Seychelles to do some dietetics work for the Prince of Saudie Arabia!!
For a little bit of feed back about the time spent over there continue to read:

"I received a phone call on the 1st of June from a recruitment company in the Seychelles saying they please need a dietician to come and work at a resort on the Seychelles for a week! I could not believe my luck, as I sent in my CV last year, did not hear anything back from them and therefore forgot about is, and out of the blue I have to board Air Seychelles from OR Tambo airport on the 7th of June to fly to the Seychelles for a week! Within a few hours after I received the phone call, I received my flight tickets and my work contract! I boarded Air Seychelles on the 7th of June at 23:55 and arrived at Seychelles airport the next morning at 06:00 am! It's a 4-5 hour flight, but the Seychelles are 2 hours ahead in time.

We were transported to the resort by bus. The resort belongs to the Prince of Saudie Arabia, and every 6 weeks he visits his resort together with guests who are invited by him personally to join him for an all expenses paid week long vacation! This is where we come in! Any service you can think of, are provided for them to make use of anytime they want during their stay at the resort. These services includes the following: a dietician, physiotherapists, massage therapists, beauty therapists, make-up artists, hairdressers, designers, a personal trainer and fitness instructor and also hosts and hostesses (these people must mingle with the guests, and entertain them during the theme parties that takes place in the evenings). All these people are recruited from South Africa and flown to the Seychelles everytime the Prince wants to visit his resort! During the day the staff must be available between 8am to 8pm if one of the guests would like to come and see you. In the evenings there are theme parties for the guests, the hosts and hostesses and sometimes the staff also gets invited! I was invited to the beach party, which was awesome! We had lobster and prawns on the beach, there was a nice band playing in the backround, I met very interesting people, and truly just had an awesome time!

The was only able to the part of the island that the resort is on, but it's beautiful! The Prince has his own private beach, and every morning before work we went for a nice swim! The humidity there is very high, it was winter at the time which means it's 29 degrees and not 35-40 degrees during the day!

It was an awesome experience, and if I ever get the chance I will definitely go again!"

Welcome to our Blog

We have decided here at Dieticians at Work, that it's time to expand and create a blog to keep the public up to date with all that we do, bring forthcoming workshops to your attention, give you access to articles published by our dieticians and most importantly let you interact with our dieticians in discussions. Let us know what you think of our new blog.
